pourlapetitefleur asked: How much food should a betta eat throughout the day? I give mine one or two Hikari pellets because I don't want to overfeed them but the little guys are starting to look really skinny. Am I starving them? I know a betta is really small, let alone his or her stomach. Also, what kind of food do you think is the best? Please advise!

Anonymous asked: If freeze dried/frozen bloodworms aren't all that nutritious for betta bellies, is it a bad idea to feed live blood worms while conditioning? Should I continue to feed pellets during this time? I've always been told that they should have "rich food" while getting ready to breed

sarufish asked: I'm sad to say my second betta died. I have no idea what the cause was, and I'm hesitant to get another one until I know the cause.

I'm really kind of stumped. He wasn't swimming very much; he stayed at the bottom of the tank mostly. I changed his water, hoping maybe he'd perk up, but I found him dead the next morning. Any ideas what I can do to avoid...

tdiaz asked: Unfortunately, in the US, it is the furry, cuddly animals that get all the love. The Animal Welfare Act explicitly excludes mice and rats used in research as well as cold blooded vertebrates like fish and frogs.

So, while it may be tasteless to sell fish exclusively for fighting in the States, there isn't a federal law against it. Local laws might have issues, but I doubt that...

annalisasnake asked: Is it legal to buy and sell bettas for fighting reasons? I found a seller on craigslist who is selling pla kats locally, and he (i assume its a he) explicitly says they are for fighting reasons, not just naming them as fighting fish /: I reported them, but if they are doing something legal, I guess I may have been in the wrong

lilkittay: It was time to move the girls to a bigger home. I was sick of the maintenence  requirements of the 5 gallon, and the plants were really getting too big for the small tank. All the plants are just aponogetons and dwarf lily and some java moss. Easy stuff. No CO2 injection, no high-end lighting. 6000kelvin bulb in the hood light. I am hoping there won’t be too much algae growth. ...

Myth: Betta-in-a-vase products mimic the betta's...
fishyskeepswimming: Reality:One of the most dangerous elements of the betta fad is the betta-in-a-vase craze. These vases are undersized, over-exposed, fail to maintain adequate temperature, and often do not provide space for air-breathing. It should be easy to see through the suggestion that they mimic the betta’s natural environment; what natural environment could a tall, narrow container...

volefleshe asked: Today I decided to euthanize my halfmoon plakat, Charcarias after finding him bloated, pine-coned and stuck side-ways in in a plant. He had been bloated and behaving normally for over a month, and this morning it turned to dropsy. I wanted to share my experience so that people might make a better decision on euthanizing vs natural death.

My decision to euthanize him was because he...

Anonymous asked: to answer tdiaz, bettas are probably more interactive in rectangular tanks because rounded tanks and bowls distort the fish's vision. They are not really recommended for fishkeeping because they cause extra stress when the fish sees everything distorted!

Myth: It is best to keep bettas in cool...
fishyskeepswimming: Reality: Because bettas are exotherms, it is true that their metabolism is directly related to the temperature of their environment. As such, there is some foundation to the suggestion that colder temperatures will reduce metabolism and thus, in theory, lengthen lifespan. However, what this theory neglects to consider is that cold temperatures are correlated with...

tdiaz asked: Part of the reason I love betta fish so much is that they're very smart. Part of the reason anon's girl is swimming against the glass when she sees them is probably because she recognizes her person. Several of mine do this, and have done this, over the years. I don't think it's too much to be worried about--but I did notice that this happens more with my kids in rectangular...

Anonymous asked: Whenever I walk near my betta's tank she swims really rapidly against the glass, flicking her tail very quickly. At first I figured she was hungry, so I fed her, but she still does it. This is day three. Is this aggression?

sarufish asked: I'm a bit concerned about my new betta. He hasn't been swimming very much, he sort of just stays at the bottom of the tank

His fins don't look torn, so I don't think he got stuck by the filter like my previous betta

I haven't been over-feeding him so I don't think he's bloated either

I've turned the tank light to...

shannon-nicola-deactivated20110 asked: Hi there!

Remember my little blue and white stripey better? Well, he's now almost completely blue and I can't understand why :( he's eating and seems happy enough, he even builds little bubble nests, but I'm still really worried.

I did have a brown algae issue because my tank was a pretty new set up (even though I did let it cycle for 2 weeks...

Myth: Bettas can be kept with goldfish since both...
fishyskeepswimming: Reality: This myth is multi-dimensional. Bettas are arguably unsuitable for keeping in bowls due to the difficulties in maintaining appropriate temperature. Goldfish should never be kept in bowls due to their waste output, oxygenation needs, and growth potential. Improper housing aside, the two species are incompatible. Bettas are small, solitary, aggressive tropical fish...

Anonymous asked: Help!
So today I was cleaning out my fish tank and I scooped out my betta and he jumped out (I know they do that but FFFFFFFFFFFFF) he landed on the counter and as I was trying to scoop him into a cup of water he managed to jump again and landed on the floor. I finally got him into a cup of water and at first I thought he was fine. I put him in his tank and I took another look. One of his...

annalisasnake asked: I recently picked up a veil tail that has long pectoral fins. Not the show fins, but the ones they use to swim with. He is blue besides, nothing remarkable. Is this a defect, something that should have been culled, or just a common occurence? I've worked with pet shop quality fish for over seven years, and I have never come across another like it.

afraidinmyeyes asked: I will say in her defense if I may, that in regards to dropsy it's very difficult to bring ANY fish back from it Betta or other wise. I've bred bettas for six and a half years and dropsy was the most difficult disease to get rid of. I never once saw ANY fish recover from it, not even a guppy.
